A French cat called Boulette has been heralded as a hero after waking the occupants of a home in Montelimar, in the Drôme region in Southwestern France when their home caught fire in the middle of the night.
The cat’s owner, Alexandra Marlin, awoke when she heard Boulette scratching in the attic near the fire. She was able to call the fire department and warn her neighbours, as well as get the other 10 members of the household out of the burning building.
Thanks to Boulette’s early warning everyone escaped safely, however their home – part of a farmhouse that had been converted into apartments – was demolished by the flames.
In the excitement, Alexandra lost sight of Boulette and felt certain she’d become a victim of the fire she’d saved the family from. To everyone’s relief the fearless feline returned the next afternoon once the furore had died down.
Alexandra is quoted in French newspaper, Le Dauphine Libéré, as saying: “The bonds of affection that bind us are even stronger than before. I have more respect for her. I believe that she certainly saved my life and that of my neighbors; it will count forever in the way I look at her.”
The family’s neighbours were equally pleased with Boulette’s bravery since firefighters arrived in time to save their homes. They’ve offered to supply her with treats as a sign of their gratitude. Hopefully they’ll include some meatballs because Boulette is the French word for meatball!
